Re: {Chrysler 300} Ziegler 300F

I was told that Chrysler Corporation tended to introduce new technology/features on either its highest price or its lowest price vehicles, with no particular pattern as to which they picked.  This from my dad, lifetime MoPar aficionado (1936 Plymouth thru 2018 Chrysler).

Maybe they wanted to experiment with it on the Valiant first.

I have a lot of factory bulletins on the 1960 alternators. Unfortunately, the one introducing the alternator doesn't have a date on the front page but it is between bulletins from May of 1960. See link below. I'll have to pull the full bulletin when I'm home. But I would guess that the F specials were built way before Imperials got alternators. My 1960 Imperial as the alternator but it is a June 1960 built car. I know the F specials had custom pulleys for the alternator that is larger than the production ones. My Imperial is untouched if anyone needs pictures of the setup. The alternator has been replaced at some point as only half of it has the wide fin spacing. I have a 1961 DeSoto at my house that has the correct date coded alternator from November 1960.

Well, I put the question to what I consider the "expert" on these cars and here is his reply.  Also, the comment about Rocky's '60 Ghia Imperial is the example that Wayne Graefen owned and found the day I purchased our '53 Imperial Newport.  They came out of the same collection.  Oh, if you haven't figured out who "Rocky" was that is Nelson Rockefeller, former VP of America and this car was his when he was Governer of NY.

John,
While there are equipment differences in details of the individual Gran Turismo cars, since they were each "hand-re-built" from production cars, I would say the regulator for the alternator is the same PN as that used on all the production '60 Imperials.  After all, that is where the F GT alternator came from.
Never had to touch the alternator nor the regulator while I owned the Drumm car.  Nor was there any issue while owning Rocky's limo.

These photos of the Ziegler car show the alternator. Is anyone familiar with the regulator Chrysler used on the alternator equipped 300 F's? In the photo I can make out what appears to be a standard 3 element regulator used with a generator. Did they use that box and employ only the voltage regulator (since a cutout and current regulator are not used with alternators)?

Don,

Sorry about the duplicate email, I’m learning how to insert pics, not sure of size limitations. I pulled up the rest of the photos and I can’t think of a better venue to share these in. The carbs were water heated, you can see the hose connection behind the large pulley alternator and the hose going to the left carb.

300ly,

Nick and group,

I took photos of Ziegler’s 300F when it came up for auction in Monterey in 2010.  Attached are some of the shots I got that day.  Air cleaners were chrome.
