RE: {Chrysler 300} Fwd: 1957 Chrysler 300C video

Hi Gary Nelson and John Grady,

Our 1957 300C also came with the 120 speedo.    3N571325, Copper Brown (metallic). When I purchased it July 19, 1958, my friend Harold Wilcoxson of Livingston, MT. had installed a 1958 300D 150 speedo, I took it out and installed the original 120 MPH. I was able to purchase a 150 MPH 300C from the Chrysler 300 Club, Inc in the 1960’s.  I never installed the 150 MPH. Later I sold the 1958 300D 150 MPH to a Club member in Arizona.

Our 300C was timed at the Belgrade, MT drag strip at 131 MPH. I am not sure whether it still had the McCulloch Super Charger  that was installed in Salt Lake City right after the 300 was purchased from Sterling Motors in Billings, MT.

Arlys and I have had a lot of fun with the 300C over the last 64 years, we drove it to Mexico from Seattle on our honeymoon, July 25, 1959 and many trips to California for Army Reserve Summer Camps with our three boys.

John in Portland, OR

FYI , that clock spring rate differs , if you have 150 speedo , you cannot use “120 guts “ to fix .  For sure on F

Did that —-huge waste of time . Spring “ rate “ on 150 differs ,  does not track scale with 120 guts . DONT touch clock spring !!!!  Ever for any reason . Once bent in any way you are done .

Ps , I learned 1000 rpm input is 60’mph on almost all speedo  . Use white tape strip

on drill chuck and optical rpm reader .

I use toothpick in chuck to drive it

But with wrong ( 120 ) clock

spring rate it will not track on 150 scale . Cannot be “adjusted “ to track 150

FYI , jkg

I have a C, ser. no. 3N571614 with 120 speedo. The story goes, if a C was coming down the assembly line and they had no 150 MPH speedo, guess what got installed.

Andrew,

It’s 571342, seen in our News-Flite #164, so not a super early build.

Curious also that -001 has a 140 mph speedo, among other unique features.

No one ever mentioned serial nunber of car!  Early # cars had 120 MPH speedometers.  One of my convs. has power antenna on left side between speedometer and top control. (3N57 2977)  late car.

From Wayne Graefen's  1957 Chrysler 300 C Handbook;

"A number of 300 Cs apparently came with 120 MPH speedometers."

See page 4 in the section Authenticity.

As you noted the 120 MPH Speedometer, (mistakes were often made.) What's up with the toggle switch and red light on the left side of the dash ? Just wondered.

Here's a new video of our Club member friend Randy Guyer's all original 300-C convertible - with a little Cold War history discussion intertwined. I'm sure you'll notice the 120 mph speedo in the dash instead of the typical 150 mph speedo - assuming this C rolled off the assembly line this way.

Those of us that attended the Fall 2019 Minneapolis Meet that Randy hosted will remember seeing this convertible, still wearing its 35+ year accumulation of dust from sitting silent in a warehouse all those years near Milwaukee.

A newly posted video [from Two Guys and a Ride] of my 1957 Chrysler 300C convertible. A bit long at around 25 minutes but I think/hope you’ll find it interesting, informative, and entertaining.
