Re: {Chrysler 300} Exhaust 300K

John,

You're not to blame. The pipes they sent me were not made to be extensions of the original. No way to make them fit as I had to angle them down to clear the rear crossmember.

Here's a picture of the wrong tailpipe overlaid on the original.

Hi ,
While  not sure , I may have inadvertently caused this .
I did not like the stock turn up and then turn down ends, so asked for a custom F tailpipe set  around 2017 ? That had extended straight ends , and was also made with about a 2” lower center Iine after the axle bend so it would pass under the bumper . I like that look  .
It also  allows larger 2.5 pipes .

I never inferred it was stock  F , clearly said modified , and they came through , but they may have accidentally mixed this  into their F specs somehow .
The point  made though , about resonators or not and exactly what you want is helped a lot by a sketch .
That said , they had prior to that  episode provided perfect stock pipes several times .
All this is conjecture , but if you have old pipe a picture and rough measurements on a sketch will help confirm you get what you want . The stock exhaust from manifold to end is rather restrictive on our cars especially on hemi converts . Even a 4.0 jeep six  has 2.25 pipe ..

I too found them co operative and smart if given clear info .

I routinely open up the passages in the convert x frame . Very tight there —needlessly so , and prone to hitting and rattling , and stock convert pipe is only 1.5 (?) there . There is no structural issue given I beam shape

They did. They called me to ask how I wanted the ends, beveled or straight.

I believe in a thorough discussion at purchase and your expectations laid out for them to manage. If I hadn't done that they were going to build a New Yorker system with resonators. I emailing them a shop bulletin diagram of the the F system and asked them to follow that now and for ever.

But the front of the system they got right. Some adjustments yes. I found them cooperative in every instance.

Did they send the correct tailpipes for the 300F? The first ones they sent me were too long and went past the rear frame cross member and had the wrong cut on the end. The bend over the axle was good. I know at least two other people that got them this way. I got mine in 2016 so they may have corrected their systems since then. They never would admit that they were wrong and Michael Van Der Veen tried to get them to replace them but they would only do it at his expense.

When I get mine corrected, or remade, I'll have another set made for him.

Here are links to pictures of both systems.

I see you got a mixed bag on Waldron. Here's my take:

They built an entirely new system for my F, end to end in 2019. All I had to do is convince them that it doesn't use resonators. The system shipped and went in fine. I had to call for a hanger which they supplied without fuss.

The built a system for my 56 Cadillac, duals, resonators and rear bumper outlets. That system went in like butter.

A system for my 60 Buick from Waldron was a little more complicated and I ended up in Nick's shoes having to make remedial bends.

Let's remember that the cars are 60+ years of age with lots of events that may have altered dimensional values. It is probably not reasonable to expect a newly minted set of bent pipes to fit every car the same way.

Try hanging a bumper on your car that came from another one, they don't always fit like butter for the same reasons.

In my view Waldron is the place to go.

Has anyone purchased one of the mail order exhaust systems out there? If so, I would like to your experiences with that.

There are only a couple of custom exhaust places left around the Bay Area and I have not had the best of luck with them, even at a high price. They tend to be in a hurry and their Q&A is lacking. They do not take the time to make sure that there is good clearance from items and down the road if a mount compresses a little next thing you know you have something rubbing. They also all want to weld everything and if you have to pull and engine or trans that is a PITA.

I will need a new all Stainless Steel exhaust at some point for the 300K. The header pipes are not looking too good and it is almost rubbing on the torsion bar.

Thanks for anyone’s experiences with the mail order houses on this.

Best to everyone for Christmas.

James
