RE: {Chrysler 300} 300F top booth color.

Gil kindly gave us Aussies a ride at the Lancaster meet.  He had the top down on the highway but had no boot installed on the day.  Plenty of thumbs up from other drivers.  I remember it was a bit blowy in the back seat when 70 was showing on the speedo and I remember the roar from under the bonnet when Gil hit the gas and the cross rams kicked in!  Beautiful blue paint and interior but a white top.  Attached photo shows Gil putting the top up when we got to the museum.  Could never understand why Chrysler offered 300s in red and white but not blue...

Dave,

More than likely the low volume for the 300 convertible drove that. Plus they all had the black carpeted rear panel and black dash pad. I haven't seen a picture of Gil's blue convertible interior but the story on the club site says that it had a blue dash, seats, panels, wheel and carpet. Doesn't mention the top boot color or if it even remained in the car.

I'm still not convinced that Chrysler would have fitted a blue boot as it doesn't appear to have been available for other models that would have been available with a blue interior.

Hi Nick-

Yeah I wondered about those ribs, figured it would go better with the G dash pad 🤪.

The boot matching the interior would make sense but I wonder why they didn’t then have tan or beige boots.

Noel- Gunnel’s book, in addition to showing Hoover and Cone’s F cv, also has photos of Bob McAtee’s P-a-M coupe, and his wife Eveline’s G cv.  They lived in Illinois- did you ever get to meet them?

Dave,

The boot on that car is not factory, It has a bunch of ribs sewn in, which wouldn't have been in the factory boot.

Keep in mind that the boot doesn't need to match the top color as that is not visible with the top down. It would typically coordinate with the interior color scheme. But they would have had limited color options and used black and white to coordinate with most interiors.

Nick/J-Y,

Maybe they had Toreador red boots available?  If so, not sure why they wouldn’t also have Terra Cotta.

In this photo of a Toreador F cv, the boot is black, but it’s just a data point and might not be original… a red boot that is not an exact match to the body color red would look off….

I've had three mopar convertibles with their original top boots and all three were black. Two cars were 1964 Polara 500 convertibles in turquoise with black interiors. One had a white top and one had a black top. The other was a 1968 Coronet 500. It was a gold car with gold seats but two-tone black and gold door panels. I've seen white boots on cars with white interiors, regardless of top color.

I would think that 300Fs with the standard interior would have a black boot, regardless of exterior or top color. But with Chrysler, nothing is 100% certain.

J-Y and Noel,

Not sure if this information is correct, but in this book by John Gunnell, he claims boot covers were either black or red, potentially with Gil Cunnighams cv being the exception if it had a blue boot.  Red doesn’t match the standard paint colors, so that’s odd…

Hi J-Y,

Chrysler offered 3 convertible top colors (colours?) on its 1960 300-Fs - refer to our Club website Tech Section / 1960 Chrysler Order Codes (pdf). On Page 3 of 6, on the right side, you'll see the Factory codes for 300-F basic car colors (BB1, WW1, PP1, ZZ1), interiors (all 353 tan), and tops (331 Black and 332 White - offered with any of the 4 body colors, and 335 Terra Cotta - offered only on ZZ1 Terra Cotta painted cars). Also listed on the 1960 non-pdf file on our site. Neither of these refers specifically to the convertible 'boot' color.

I've attached a couple photos of Terra Cotta convertible top cars -

  • Tom Garrard's F that sold thru Mecum Indy 2018 - first 2 photos
  • My buddies' Petal Pink '60 Windsor on which they installed a Terra Cotta top, seen at Iola 2016

You may also seen videos of Randy Guyer's BB1 and PP1 300-F convertibles, on which he installed non-factory tan-colored Haartz cloth tops -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYKs2QonZlo - video on our Club website for the July 2019 Minneapolis Meet; from about 4:30 to 9:00 of this video, displaying the tan cloth tops.

You can catch a glimpse of part of the boot on the Milt Robson P-a-M 4-speed F convertible - white with white top, and the catalog photo shows a black boot. MR10 Digital Catalogue (rmsothebys.com).  And all the 1960 brochures/ads I see show a black boot.

It's your call!
