{Chrysler 300} Re: EL cap

Thanks Carl/John,

Will give a couple different capacitors a try and see how they do-

actually .1 is pretty common ? i would add that type “X and Y “ are ac rated across the line caps “ interference suppression “ caps 330 ac or more ac V but that is maybe not necessary .
DC caps are fine , the  peak V of ac is 1.4 ac volts , we have about 300 so 420 . Practically , the common rating is 630 dc
Keeping it simple .1 uF 630dc . , any style . Extend the leads . Panasonic plastic  film caps are really good as Carl  says!

Hi Dave,

Remember that with capacitors the exact capacitance isn’t critical; you can go 50% higher if you want, or you can go a little under, just make sure it’s an AC rated cap with rated voltage equal or greater than what’s currently in there, higher voltage rating is better, 0.1.uf should be common.  You want axial leads if you can find one, they will be longer, and cost more, but far less selection to choose from as most are short radial leads for circuit boards as you note.  But you can use radial leads and solder extra wire on as well, also the new cap will be a lot smaller than the original.  I like both DigiKey and Mouser, maybe check both for selection.  Panasonic is a good brand, but many others as well.  See you at Hershey!

Here is one for example from Mouser but the leads are short, designed for circuit boards I guess (as a lot of them seem to be).  Are these useable- just solder wires to the leads to make them longer?  Or do you guys have a different style preference?

Thanks!

Hi John/ Carl,

I read the write up on the tech page about repairing EL power pack.  This one I took the back off of has a 0.1 uF cap.  Didn’t see that value listed as a common value but guessing if I ordered one +/- 10 % it would be fine.  Do you recommend Mouser or some other supply house?
Thanks!
Dave
