Yes indeed to the coil springs. 

About 40 years ago my lower hose was soft.
And it failed. 

It did not have the Spring

I replaced it with a Chrysler part, spring included.   Go figure.

Worth knowing, especially if I can’t extricate the existing spring from the old hose (or if it disintegrates.) The lower hose has a 1.75” ID and is about 20” long on the outside, so this would fit fine.

There's a lot of opinions if that lower hose is needed or not. I've even read that it was only in there to make filling on the assembly line possible using some sort of vacuum system. 

I use them as I've seen lower hoses collapse during overheating and I don't buy into the new hoses being built that much better. 

The Mustang guys have been reproducing them for a number of years. Stainless steel wire and I think the diameter will work. The other option is buying some SS wire and winding it around something a bit smaller in diameter than the ID of the hose.

Echoing what Noel says, that is what I’ve also heard from the local Napa owner.  The rubber is different now, stiffer under heat, so no spring needed.  I’ve removed enough radiator hoses to have seen how soft the old natural rubber sometimes is (I’ll give it to the old school rubber- it was made to last), and more rusty springs in pieces than I can count, so if you want a spring, maybe there is a stainless option…?  If you’re racing, it may be that a spring is mandatory…
