RE: {Chrysler 300} 300B Stumbling at 60+ MPH

The trouble with our old carbureted engines is that many running problems can be caused by the same or multiple failures.

For that reason it's generally advisable to approach a running problem like this with a full set of basic diagnostics. Get out your vacuum gauge. Get out your timing light.

The shop manual will break it down for you and it's as relevant today as it was 70 years ago. You have a spark or fuel deficiency and you've got to determine which one it is. That's why I would start with baseline information. What is my timing, how are the points set.  Are they in good condition, what do the spark plugs look like, and so forth. Avoid the temptation to throw Parts at it.

You shouldn't have much trouble narrowing this down to a few things and then finding the problem.

Hi Ron,

Feels like it is holding back and has a slight sputtering sound.  That said, it has never stalled.  The motor was rebuilt back around 2014-15.

Thanks,

Brian

Brian –

Does it feel like it’s holding back, or are you stepping on the accelerator, but nothing is happening ? Has it ever stalled at high speed ? How many miles on the engine and is it original or has it been rebuilt ?

Hello Everyone,

Anyone have any suggestions for troubleshooting Carter adjustments (or otherwise) for a car that stumbles beyond 60 mph.  It starts up fine, idles smooth, accelerates strong up to 60 mph and then stumbles...even at fully open throttle.

I suspect there is an accelerator pump issue or secondary is not opening under vacuum.  Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Brian W.
