Re: {Chrysler 300} Trouble in F land.

I’ve always suspected that a ballast resistor was at the root of the Lindbergh kidnapping….and my blood pressure! Now I know it.

I too make certain I have spares.

They do seem to be something that everyone blames whenever there's any ignition problem. I think some have even blamed the Lindberg baby kidnapping on a bad ballast resistor.

Myself, I've had maybe two go bad in all the Mopars I've had over the years (a lot of them) and I know one of those was due to road salt spray with a rusted out inner fender.

I do think they are a little fragile though and have seen a couple where the ceramic has been broken and the life of the resistor gets shortened.

All that said, I do carry a spare...

But what I never understood was why people would accuse a ballast resistor of having failed when they had an intermittent problem. Almost always a ballast resistor burns open and no dice after that.

I've never bought the idea that Chrysler had defective ballast resistors or a bad design. I think rather coils were substituted in later years improperly matched to the ballast resistor.

John,

Every Ford and Chevy owner seem to know about Chrysler ballast resistors. They always ask me if I carry a spare one.

From your symptoms, I would put my money in the ballast resistor on your firewall. Same happened in my ‘61 NYer wagon. Changed it and ran fine again. A much overlooked electrical item.

I would change the condenser in the distributor...as it was mentionned lately on a related thread, some are unreliable and work erratically...
