RE: {Chrysler 300} 1960 Alaskan White Paint Match

When painting my 300C, my painter tried to match the paint to what was under the top windscreen stainless trim.  It was the only decent original paint left on the car.  I sent a sprayed out sample afterwards to Gil Cunningham who had an original factory master colour sample – at least for Cloud White.  He told me the master was close to mine, but a little bit creamier.  But I was still happy with the way it came out.  Does it really matter if it was not a perfect match? Probably not.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone in the Club had contact with Gil, or later with Carol to preserve some of the records that I know Gil had saved from his days at Chrysler.  From memory he was a bit sceptical about the colour charts that the paint manufacturers put out.

I’ve painted to match original colors more than I care to attempt again. I learned that in the end, absent an un-faded example you will need to satisfy yourself. The inner jambs and under deck lid can provide samples but these too have eroded from time. Photos and brochures are as faithful as the film and inks involved, not unlike advertising comparing two color TV’s on your TV! Remember those from the 60’s & 70’s?

Same thing.

I went to paint a 56 Cadillac Dawn Grey, a pale violet. Found two dozen examples, none quite the same. Ordered “Dawn Grey” from Glasurite, sprayed it out and said to myself, “hell I can do 24 sprays with different tints, with no target what’s the point? “

So it went on just as it came from the can and I like it.

Since enough of you have been around to see these wearing their original paint we know Alaskan White is not Maytag White.  So what I would do is let your paint mfg mix what they say is Alaskan White and start there. Use Ron’s suggestions and do some spray outs until you get something you like, not too white, not too cream. In the end its going to be personal taste given the lack of evidence.

Thanks for comments on single/two stage paint.

Comment was made about matching the 1960 Alaskan White Paint with modern paint colors.   Tony R. commented that it closely matches 1988 Nissan All Models: Mint White 002.

Interested in anybody else experiences/selections that have done the 1960 Alaskan White.  My impression is that it is a warmer white with an ever so subtle hint of yellow (based on conversations and my observation of club cars).

Thanks again.

Jim
