I've been looking at a 3- phase lift(used), but I only have single phase in my building(have 220v- 2- hots & neut.) Should I find a 3- phase converter? ....anyone have any experience with those?

My barn is about 100 feet away , and the lift would not start up  with a heavy car on the ramp . Motor very unhappy and hum but no start , that may blow breaker . I think it takes 30-40 A + to start , ok on a circuit breaker 15 or 20 ,but only  if it starts  in seconds . 20 much better . Wire to barn was 120/240 50 A # 8 
If it does not start it can hurt motor and other problems if you keep trying ( start up cap gets beaten up )
rewiring mine  to 240 v was not possible it had 120 V only motor as shipped  
so this may help you . I put a 2.5 kva 120/240 by 120 240  transformer off ebay in a metal box on one corner where pump is . I had wired the shop 30A 240 for welder , i ran a 240 v 30 A cord ( 2 live wires and green safety ground ( no  white) to transformer , connected as an auto transformer , white from outlets goes  onto center tap , windings in parallel at 240 connection . do not connect center tap to ground . Auto transformer connection  doubles physical kva  . I put 4 outlets there ,on box so  like a 40 amp plus  availability right   at lift .Used 30 amp fuse delay type   on live 115 v side  
Lift ran great , instant start and the 4 outlets  give me 120v very heavy duty,  now  fed by 240 v , right where working 
point is lift motor hp  in very high for only 120 v . Air compressors on 120  same deal

You raise the lift about a foot and place the casters in position , then lower the lift which causes it to remain above the ground on the casters. However, it is really a two man operation to move and place the lift in position. It is very heavy and while rolling easily, it can have a "mind of its own" when it is moved.
