I once painted a perfect G convert black with Imron , best paint you could get way back . ( outlawed due to carcinogen in it later) So called “ wet look”
I ruined the car ! the clear over black looked awful it looked like someone poured clear thick plastic on the car .But It was ok in red , used on Fire engines And impossible to sand that off . I sold the car .
why do it ? original black had no clear . I had a D that someone did lacquer on , spectacular in black , yes, but problems of lacquer over enamel started . And not “ better” maybe different is a better word . Present single stage are like original , but better?
This is a good thread . I never thought how color plays a role in paint system selection Current single stage is beautiful and can be rubbed out , Issue of water base comes up too I won't go there , but best painter I know uses “?Sikkens” German/ Euro system used on Mercedes Not sure exactly what it is , but gorgeous . As he puts it “Big bucks worth every cent “ Their computer color match really works too . Others are flaky as we know
He does those Harley ghost paint jobs , ( side business) flames pin stripes by hand etc . Only guy I know that can paint House of Color stuff really right , ( very hard to do) so I go with him , if he will help me , I hopefully know what I do not know. . Lately though like many body shops he just does not want our kind of work . They want to fix crashed BMW high pay by insurance fast in and out $ Restoration ties up a shop bay for months …

In case anyone is interested, when the Walter P Chrysler Museum was assembling their display and touring show vehicles , a careful debate as to what process to use , one that considered all situations was conducted . It was agreed to use base coat/clear coat. Marv Sent from my iPhone On Aug 4, 2025, at 6:23 PM, dplotkin@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx wrote:
Mike, you will have many opinions. Here's one from a guy who painted a 61 Plymouth & a 56 Cadillac Fleetwood.
In my case the Cadillac was done in Glasurit urethane 2 stage. It's a pastel color, a pale violet and I'm happy with the result given that color. The 61 Plymouth is black Glasurit urethane single stage. That decision was based on my comparison of test-sprays of both ways and examining black cars at high end shows and auctions. What I found is that generally black in two stage appears "greasy" when compared to highly finished single stage. See the attached photo, make your own call.
What color are you painting?

Question for the group is a single stage paint the preferred product for restoring our cars. My paint guy is in favor of base clear. Opinions??
