Re: {Chrysler 300} Inline Electric Fuel pump

Hi
Paper filters in the inlet line  are very restrictive to flow when wet or even small amount of debris Pumps hate inlet restrictions  reduces rated gph why you even at times see the inlet is larger than outlet . ( the recent   washer pump discussion shows that ) The restriction in gas feed  is there all the time even when main pump is on

.I know- “ It worked for me” will come but it is theoretically wrong  .
But yes on an older car you do need a filter , evrn with stock pump .
Over many years of old cars , not just 300 , ( although  a J did strand me due to this ) the only thing   that ever stopped me dead ( in the sense nothing you can do on road ) was gas tank crud (from sitting ) getting into fuel pump . Three times  on 30’s-40’s Packards
Even if you blow out line and new pump it happens again in 100 miles

So went at this .

Summit and others sell a large filter with a 100 micron stainless steel screen made for  alcohol race cars, so free flow . About 5” long and 1.5” diameter  Various versions , they do get spendy  , but house version was about 40$ ( worth it )
You can open it and clean  it out  , threaded with O rings  it will hold a LOT of rust etc so you keep going

The Renu process is excellent on tanks , one in midwest in particular but costly in 400 $ area , but ends corrosion and much better than a new tank . Baked on epoxy in and out I think  .Have done that three times

Some types of booster pump also resist suction  flow when off ,  others can speak to that . I have always used rotary carter pump if electric , as the  main pump too but it is noisy   .

Carter recently came  out with in tank low pressure pump for  carbs (all  in tank are 40 psi • for  FI before ) might be an answer .

As far  as hoses there is no pressure on suction side and stock often use rubber at engine .fuel pump inlet

As far as two pumps in a line you add a new hazard as a cracked mechanical pump  diaphragm ( how they fail) lets gas run into engine oil , unknown to you.   .

Why the carter for main pump came  about  , rather than series booster,  out of caution . A bunch  of chock valves with pump in parallel could  solve that but a mess .
Rather just crank it , oils the engine too . Does not hurt anything

Good to add oil pressure switch too ,especially  if electric used as  main pump , one from 78 Dodge 318 truck works

The Auto Zone pump comes with a brass fuel filter so since this is a lifetime guarantee, I will use this new one with the filter.   One side has a barb and one side has a threaded fitting.

Thanks for all your comments.

I have used “primer” pumps on several cars including the G for years.  I’ve always used a filter between the tank and the pump.  It sounds like the pump you have is the type with hose barbs on both ends.  I use the Facet style pump and it has threaded fitting on the input side, barb on the output.  Sometimes they come with the filter,  which is a common parts house piece, and also available in a shorter version.  I would not run any primer pump without an input filter.  I’ve recently installed this one on my Barracuda project car, but it is the same as the one on my G:

Subject: {Chrysler 300} Inline Electric Fuel pump

Hello All,

I have gone through 2 electric fuel pumps in about 12 years, the last one under life-time warranty at Auto Zone.  They replaced it at No-Charge pending return of the old one.  A few questions.

  1. A local mechanic gave his opinion that the last pump may have failed because I did not put a fuel filter in between the gas tank and the pump.
  2. The 300 runs strong with the failed primer pump, so my question is, “Could the pump be clogged and not working while the 300 starts up (just using mechanical pump from engine) and runs fine?”
  3. It is mounted above the rear axle, just after the gas tank.  It has a separate switch that is for prime only and the pump does not run other than for starting the engine.

I can replace the pump to include an inline filter, but I don’t like to put extra splices in the rubber fuel line (under the car) if the cause for the pump to fail is not due to the lack of a fuel filter.

Thanks in advance for your comments.
