Re: {Chrysler 300} 1957-58 Chrysler factory air conditioning equipment

This brings up a question I have always had. First a side comment; The oil is (big laugh) probably no worse or marginally more stupid than present mopar electric feed back actuators all made in China for 2$ that fail. 2000$ labor on a jeep GC , have  to pull dash console etc to get at it. And the Blend door fiasco, same thing. Then one year after that the aluminum foil AC evaporator springs a leak  . 2000$ again. And you wonder why they are worth nothing as used cars, and  why Totyota wins. None of this happens in 300K.

I Hope they can hire back the guy who designed Dodge trucks in 70's or Dart!— Bowdoin operated water valve under hood and doors run by Bowdoin wires. Perfect instant air temp control no computer BS "helping you" by turning on AC when all you want is heated fresh air on defrost

I do also see lots of 57 parts in the photos.  One of the silliest parts of the system is how the 'fresh' vs. 'recirculating' door is operated with hot engine oil with a line from the rear main to the solenoid that mounts on the firewall sort of between the distributor and the master cylinder to 'switch' the oil on and off to operate the door.  There are both solid and 'rubber' lines for that part of the system that I don't see in the pictures.  There is also a 'return line' for any overflow to be routed to the oil filler neck that comes up out of the lifter valley pan.  That neck on the oil fill tube is probably also unique to an A/C car.  Not sure why they didn't use vacuum or mechanical method rather than routing hot oil for such a simple function.
Also, the 'airbox' that houses the fan has a layer of insulation around it that is not the case for a non-A/C car, making it rather unique.  I spent way too much time getting it working right in my 57, and could never keep it working as it would always leak out the compressor seal or one or more of the plumbing fittings.  I should have figured out a way to mount a Sanden in there, but wanted to keep it original since it was an original A/C car and had all the rest of the parts present.

That looks like a 57 unit, as I think the expansion valve was outside the box on 58. You would need the Ducts to the dash vent and the vents themselves to complete the system.

Hello,

As I continue to go through the parts my grandfather collected for over forty years, I have complied what I believe are the major components for a factory air setup on a 57-58 Chrysler.  Below is a link to the photo album.  Would anyone who knows about A/C systems mind looking at this album and letting me know if this looks like just about everything needed?  Also, if you are interested in this complete lot, let me know too.

Thanks,
Josh
