All brake fluids are fully compatible by law, including DOT 5. It is not advisable to do it, but they will work together.
DOT 3 would have been the original.
DOT 4 is highly hydroscopic(picks up moisture quickly-leading to rusted lines and stuck cylinders).
DOT 5 is really good stuff but to convert fully, the system should be flushed out with denatured alcohol before filling. DOT 5 also doesn't hold moisture so any in the system will puddle somewhere and can lead to problems under heavy braking when the water can turn to steam. It needs a bit more regular attention than DOT 3 or 4.
