Won't tell on my self, but will share a true story ,,,,,,,Back in the 60s
I
owned a full service gas station/2 bay shop, and had hired a local high
school boy for a flunkie, got exactly what I was paying for, one Sunday
while
he was running the pumps which was the only thing he was suppose to do, a
regular customer dropped off a flat tire, and was to pick it up on
Monday,
he thought he would do me a favor and patch it for me,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
wrong,,,,,,,,,,,,,he pulled the nail, used the tire grinder to clean the
area of
the puncture, taking off rubber until smooth and clean about the size of
the
chemical patch,,,,,,,,good and great, except he did it on the outside of
the tire, grinding the tread off until flat, and installing the patch on
the
outside of tire, needless to say, I had to replace the tire

Back in the early 60's I had a set of Maloney cheater slicks on my '64.
That was the end of my tire buying every 6 weeks. They lasted. They were
retreads too of course.

Yep Ford and chrome reverse wheels. I had to learn those lessons too.
Also a
good lesson was to remember to wet the windshield down and let it soak a
couple of seconds before trying to get all those bugs off the lady in
the
car kept pointing at( How long since any one had a windshield washed I
remember the squirt bottle and paper towels before sponge wands). But
guess
it was OK cause I could usually sell that qt of oil to better my chances
in
the Standard Oil oil selling contest. I actually have the set of
binoculars
I won back then. Do they even retread any tires except truck tires now
days?
I remember the "Vulcanizing" retread machine at Gregg Tire in Topeka it
was
the pride of T-town.

Ron,
Tire story and the wound to prove it...love the honesty !! There is a
place
in heaven for you.
My crazy tire story..at 15 years old worked for a Firstone Tire Shop on
Saturday. We sold full service gas (hope up all remember the days, I was
the
kid that sold you a qt of oil when u really didn't need it ). Thats all
that
really happened on Sat. Maybe a oil change.
I was the only guy there at 10 AM, a woman came in and bought a full set
of
tires and balance. WOW< I made the sale !!!
No problem for a high stepper like me. Thank goodness she lived just
around
the corner, was walking home and call her when finished and she would
pick
up the vehicle.
Ollie jumps on the job. Car on the lift..first wheel off and to the tire
machine machine we go. Keep in mind this is a early 60's Ford. I screw
the
wheel down, outside side up (hub cap side), break the bead both
sides......hey we rocking and rolling now. Put the bar under the tire
bead..hey we going now...1/2 way round the machine bogs down and quits
.
One hour later with no progress, tire still on the wheel ... I really
begin
to ponder... I have figured the only way to get this tire off is with a
hack
saw. This ain't right!! I only hope the woman does not show up right now
!!!
In sheer panic... I call The Boss. Son, he says, thats a FORD... turn
the
wheel over, upside down to make it easy for you to understand,... and
get
after it!!
Never had a problem after that...hey..there are wide and narrow sides
inside
a wheel, sure makes it easy to get a tire off if you use the narrow side
!!!.
Ron, made it thru that one with only wounded pride !! PLUS.. the Boss
did
jump on me for ruining a recappable casing..hope some still remember
those
days....
Ollie
