dwell meter

Hi all, I picked up a Mac Tools tach, Dwell meter, and volts, gauge machine, 
at a garage sale. It is a little box that looks like a lunch box. I know 
nothing about it other than it works. Is there any way to set my engine 
timing with this? My timing light is broke, and I don't want to buy another 
one. I have no idea what dwell means, I know someone out there knows and 
could enlighten me, If you don't ask you will never find out.  Thanks...
