He will have to take all the rod caps and mains off, and lift out the
crank with the converter still attached to

Thanks for all the replies. Good tips. But I double checked with the guy and
it turns out the combo in question is from a 1961, not a 1962! Yikes! So
that means the transmission is a cast iron TorqueFlite. I seem to recall
that year cast iron TorqueFlites did not use a flex plate but bolted
directly to the crankshaft. in other words, there was an extended flange on
the crankshaft with a torque converter with studs that bolt directly to the
crankshaft, (no flex plate). Does that change things on how to proceed with
the motor locked up?

Pull the trans out of the torque converter leaving the converter hanging
on the flex plate. Then you can easily reach the bolts. Do it all the time
parting out frozen up engines. It does mean that both have to be out of
the car though.
