The exhaust gas is coming through the trunk weatherstrip. To check it run 
your finger along the inner edge of the trunk weatherstrip and inner metal edge. 
If your fingers show black -- that's it. 

Problem is much worse if you have the 235 horse 273 engine with the 
resonator.
