Re: pricing a car to sell -- asking price?

A friend of mine recently decided to sell his Toyota pickup. It's a 2013 model and he's pretty frail, so he's always considered the suspension a bit too harsh and therefore only driven it when he really needed to get something large. Otherwise he drove his nice soft Corolla. So it's only done 5,500 miles.

He asked his son in law about it and he looked up prices on the net. Of course, there's nothing there as brand new or with such low mileage and prices around the $20,000 mark were common. This blew my friend away, he was expecting maybe $10,000. Then a neighbour, learning the pickup was for sale, approached him and asked, "How much?"

Bob replied, "I always reckon something is worth as much as someone is prepared to pay for it. You make an offer." And so it sold for $15,000 and everyone's happy.

Thanks for all the feedback! I put together a summary of the replies and added a link and then sent the info to him. I
hope to hear back form him sooner than later. I'll post what he says. Below is the summary that may help others too.

Thanks,

You first need to research what compatible vehicles are selling for currently.

Here is a web page that walks you through some of that. It is working with 1962 to 1965s but the logic is the same.

You should place an appropriate asking price with "OBO." You can always lower it. If you leave the price open then it is a
lot of time wasted on extra photos, answering questions and dealing with low-ball offers. The market where you live may
have less or more interested buyers than other market locations. Some locations will garner a premium price due to a
lack of availability. But remember, there is "book" value and "personal" value. If the vehicle is one the buyer relates to
(“my brother had one of those!”) the buyer will pay more than “book” price.

Please address private email -- email of interest to only one person -- directly to that person. That is, email your parts/car transactions and negotiations, as well as other personal messages, only to the intended recipient. Do not just press "reply" and send your email to everyone using the general '62-'65 Clubhouse public email address. This practice will protect your privacy, reduce the total volume of mail and fine-tune the content signal to Mopar topic. Thanks!
