I had a '64 Dart GT convertible as well for about a year. It had a slant six with an automatic. The park cable on mine came down and hit the exhaust burning a hole in the shift cable jacket. I took off the shifter end of the cable and slid heat shrink tubing with glue on the inside over it and that sealed the leak for me. Getting the transmission end of the cable out was a real challenge on that car for some reason, so I just left it attached.
