fuel sending units. 65 B-body

Well its spring now so I cant use the cold as an excuse to avoid working on the coronet.
I want to drop the tank and see how she looks inside and I thought maybe I should get
a new fuel sending unit. They aren't that much but I am running into two different size
types. One says 5/16 and the other is 3/8. I imagine that is either the size of the metal tube or the size of rubber fuel line needed.  Were the 5/16 for 6 cylinders?  What were the 3/8 applications?
  Thanks,
   Neal Zimmerrman, Eugene Oregon.
