Re: tranny swap rebalance?

In my experience, earlier engines are more likely to have the full crank recess machined.  Later into the 60's and on they seem less likely (when it is an automatic trans originally installed with that engine of course) to have the full machining, but there will be a shallower recess that is slightly too small to accept the oilite bushing as is.  I've seen somewhere, but don't seem to find right now, the particular bit and reamer needed to drill and finish out the shallow recess to accept the bushing.  There is a workaround however.  Later model engines used a needle bearing that fit not in the bushing recess hole, but in the shallow crank recess around the hole.  I saw Ehrenberg in a magazine article installing one of these bearings on a '60's car and cutting down the end of the transmission input shaft to shorten it.  The input shaft is supported in this bearing but the input shaft is shortened since there isn't room in the non-bored crank for it.  So I bought two of these bearings and so far have used one to do this procedure; no problems at all doing it.  I'm attaching a picture of the bearing (the actual part name is a "sleeve") and the Mopar OEM  part number 53009180.  I did a quick search on ebay and this one doesn't come up that I could see.  The article by Ehrenberg in Mopar Action actually listed the late model OEM cars that used this item IIRC, but I just can't remember what they were.  But maybe still available through a dealership?

Yes some cast cranks never had the recess,  Mine is ok. In fact when I had the motor (340/steel crank) done I had the guy install a pilot bushing , just in case I wanted to do this down the road.

I heard stories of late 70s small block cranks not being machined for input shafts. I never seen it myself it maybe folklore.

No. But my situation, I have a hp 440 magnum and that had the heavy rods and a offset weight on the balancer so it needed a weighted flywheel. I believe the regular 440s were not like that, they were weighted enough on the inside. But with any engine they sell flywheels with different oz weights some bolt on some fixed.

If one went from an automatic to a manual tranny, would you need to have your motor rebalanced?
