Re: Is my new engine ruined?

Hi Neil!

Agree with All said already. But I'd pull all spark plugs, if any. & squirt PB Blaster in cylinders b4 oil and let sit a bit, then spin engine- any if any fine rust will desolve . Spin engine & let the PB escape
 Then oil & compression test.
You'll be fine as All have said.

I have a 400 from a 73 roadrunner I had,  Rebuilt it in 1986, 30 over, 509 cam, I believe 915 heads with large big block chevy valves, single plain intake, never started or installed in car, I turn if over at least ones a year, I know a few small acorns might have fell into the distributor hole, some day I'll find a car for it. I think it needs a once over to clean it out. Maybe stroke it. John Wask....

My engine sat for 4 full years after it was built. Consider all the basic tips others have said and most important priming before starting.

Hi folks, I am wondering if my brand new 340 has sat too long and if i should open it up to refresh it.??
I guess on my Barracuda project  I got the cart before the horse and should have had the engine  rebuilt last. Now that everything is ready to go, I am wondering if the engine could be rusted up from sitting for 5 years.  It has been in my insulated shop, and I turned it over by hand occasionally ( but probably not often enough).  The intake was stuffed with rags as were the headers. But still, Oregon is pretty wet in the winters with plenty of humidity.
Admittedly this is not my proudest moment, but with covid shut downs, unemployment and health issues things kind of got away from me. Once again, I should have been on top of this but I wasn't.
I am wondering if  I should pop the heads and inspect the cylinder walls and valves..
    What do you guys think??
