I installed a 70 GTX rear housing drum to drum on my Polara. It is narrower by almost 2". More room for tires.I can go to at least a 295R6015 on it.Rich Kinsley and I will be making a major swap between our cars in 2-3 months. he's getting my 8 3/4 and I'll be putting in a dana. I had no problem whatsoever in my install several years ago.Everything matched beautifully.

Bill,
Did you by chance install a Dana rear end? I set the '70 - 8 3/4" sure 
grip side by side with my stock '64 and measured them prior to 
installation. I found the '70 to be 1" narrower than the '64 when 
measuring the outside surface of the drum (where the wheel attaches) to 
the outside surface of the drum on the opposite side...Brian
