Thanks, that helps.  I never thought of the filler plug.  :-(
It is in a 318 car...but I have to check.

My 1963 Service Man. says (and I quote!)..."I.D. of Sure Grip diff
assembly 
can be made by the letter "S" stamped on the I.D.  pad on the right side
of 
the carrier housing, or by a metal tag reading "Use Sure-grip Lube" 
attached by means of the rear axle housing-to-carrier bolt, below the 
carrier filler plug. If the letter "S" or the tag is not apparent,
remove 
the filler plug and use a flashlight to look up through the filler plug
hole 
to ID the type of case. The Sure Grip type diff. case (two piece 
construction)  has attaching bolts. The conventional type diff case (one

piece construction) has a dome-like shape with no case cap attaching
bolts"
