Looking down through the intake manifold on the left (drivers side of the engine near the rear there is more often than not on the 392 a very visable "A1" cast in the block near the lifter valley cover there.
Some 392s dont have it but no 354 or 331 has it so it is at least a quick way to tell. Secondly , pull a plug and take a piece of steel rod about 2 feet long. If you use no 1 plug (or no 6) put the engine a TDC on the pulley , place the rod in the hole directly on the piston and mark it at the top of the spark plug tube. Remove the rod and roll the engine exactly 180 degrees or 1/2 turn. Reinsert the rod and mark it again. The distance between the two marks should be 3.9 inches if it is a 392. (Don's rule for 8 cyl engines with a 4 inch bore states displacement is always stroke X 100 +2 ) a 392 has a 4 inch bore so if it measiures 3.9 inches then displacement is 3.9 X 100 =390 +2 = 392.
Just for comparison. a 360 also has a 4 inch bore and a 3.58 stroke and so 3.58 X 100 +2 =360 (3.58X100=358 +2 =360)
