One reason for the groove is improved lifter bore lubrication as oil is for sure now on all sides of the lifter by way of the groove, bathing the lifter and its bore in soft, warm, soothing, lubricating oil. Ah, I can feel it already.  If a lifter sticks or is stiff in the bore it is instant cam death as it's rotation is inhibited and there fore it quickly overheats.  Just a tip while we are on the subject. We hone all lifter bores when rebuilding just to be sure and actually check the bore for a free fit with a lifter before assembly
