Earl,
  You are correct. Nowadays the only way to go in a single stage paint  is 
with a hardner. Shrinkage is minimal and durability and gloss is much better  
with a hardened product, regardless if it is paint, spot filler putty, primers,  
etc. The days of uncatalyzed products are really coming to an end. As I  
mentioned, my only concern with the steering wheels was not how it holds up in  
the sun and so forth, but from the hands constantly creating wear on the wheel  
from merely steering the car. I know that this is the correct process for us
