My wagon original color was Polar white and does not appear to have ever been blacked out
behind the grill.

My 64 Polara is wearing it's second coat of light green, done many years

scratches.

I would really like to know the "real" deal with this. I have asked many

experts, those I know and trust and those that I don't know, and heard

the black behind the grille...

I hope more people on the board here weigh in on this issue.

"all cars" is a pretty broad statement,
my car was all original when i bought it, it was gold

these areas black, before this thread.
i have seen many originals, none with the black
treatment.

nope. the "behind the grille black out" was used on
all cars, except
those that were body color black, dark green, or
dark blue.

my 63 Dodge 330 was a stripped down 330 wagon, body
color white, with
the black out, my 64 Dart is beige car with the
black out. same goes
for my 67 Dart GT (gold).

I was advised that the correct color was semi-gloss
black. after
applying that color to the blackout area on my 63
Dodge, and comparing
it to what was there before and what is on my 64
Dart, I think
semi-gloss is the correct color.
