Tom, Along about there in the process, I generally send a note like:

That either works, or does not work, but it seperates the serious from 
the B.S. pretty effectively.  And I feel better, too!

Of course if it's something I REALLY want, I would be more polite, but 
not for too long.  There will be another one along before too long.

Please address private mail -- mail of interest to only one person -- directly to that person.
