When did you check the oil befor the trip or just after  returning,,,,,,, as 
I recall, there was some question as to the return  holes in the head possibly 
being restricted and retaining oil in the rocker arm  area, if the oil was 
drained after just running the car, there could have been  oil still in the RA 
covers that drained down after the oil had been replaced,  causing the high dip 
stick reading, just a thought,,,,,,,,,,, and I have always  been told that it 
was better to run an engine that was a quart low on oil as to  running one 
that was a quart high
