Jim, What your describing is exactly what a 66 Belvedere with a 440 that 
I owned was doing. It started after recurving the distributor and 
advancing the timing. The engine was firing too early and kicking back. 
I took the initial timing back a couple of degrees and it cured the 
problem. Give that a try and see if it makes any difference.
