RE: A-Body Axle Choice?

I have swapped a 8 1/4, but if I was to do it again, I would use a Ford Mustang 8", since is cheaper than a 8 3/4 or 9" and uses no C clips. Any of the swaps you do will involve shortning on the driveshaft.

I have started studying up on rear-end choices for my '64 Valiant.

The 7 1/4 that's in it now is working just fine, and I will leave it alone for now, but I want to get a strong idea of what swaps make sense if I get more horsepower working up front, AND what choices I have in order to get a larger bolt pattern for the wheels I want to install.

Reading Frank Adkins' book, Chrysler Performance Upgrades has given me a wide look at possibilities; each with its own drawbacks, like the 8 1/4" having C-Clips, and a possibility of breakage, and like the Dana 60 being "extremely heavy."

Somebody I read even suggests that a certain Ford rearend (9"?) will bolt right in.

Anyway, I just want to know who has done what, with what success. I just want something reasonably strong and dependable with the 5x4.5" bolt circle.

thanks!
