Re: wagon rear end strength

I know the WOS guys pretty well, and they got me all concerned about that too. But honestly I've found with my 330 383 4-speed wagon that the old 742 tapered axle rear setup is actually pretty friggin heavy duty, even some of the guys on here will tell you that the max wedge stockers used this rear setup. This with good springs (and if you're tired of one wheel action, a posi kit too) should suit you fine, especially if this car has an auto tranny. Remember that the 4 speeds really hammer everything compared to the autos, in fact, though its no longer offered, MP had a completely different SS spring for the manual car that was much beefier. If your rear end says 742 on it, then I don't think that there's a reason to worry, I haven't broken mine on the track, and I'm relentless on the light, if any body would break it, it would be me. Beware of the 741s though, they have a smaller pinion and are much more likely to break.

vehicle: my 64 plymouth fury wagon
   subject: 8.75 rear end strength
concern: over at the Wagons of Steel Mopar site they were talking
about the weight of the wagons and wether or not the 8.75 was strong
enuf for such a heavy assed car such as a wagon, they were upgrading
     to a Dana.
      I found a rear from a 67 coronet 4 door for 100 bucks , so i can
dump the tapered axle setup, but is this going to be strong enuf for
a beefy 440 ?? maybe Don D. old reliable or more??
I know the 8.75 is a strong rear but the guys at Wagons of steel got
me concerned about the ass weight issue?
granted they were discussing a later wagon, i think it was a 73
coronet wagon so those might weigh more, or it might have been a
suburban or somesuch which i think is actually a C-body. I imagine my
    64 is a little lighter.
