Re: Trans pushbutton units

Hi Gary (& others), thanks for the replies.

Well, what it is...
After a few suggestions from the good people here on the list, my brother & I had a go last weekend to try and get our pushbutton & cables lubricated & adjusted. We got the unit out from behind the dash, but hanging down, still attached to the cables. As I said before, the cable retaining brackets had been bent over to keep the cables in place. As Paul L pointed out, the FSM says the bracket(s) would need to be pried open, but the spindle that the cable end was attached to had also been swaged over. So we thought we'd try what we could to get the unit lubricated and the cable adjusted without separating them completely. With all the pushbuttons removed from their actuators/levers (or whatever they're called), the levers moved freely enough in and out. There didn't appear to be anything wrong with the unit in this state of dis-assembly, so we put it back in the dash and refitted the pushbuttons. After a few pushes of the neutral & drive buttons they started working. Sort of. Occasionally. Buttons would get pushed in, but wouldn't always latch in, and wouldn't always unlatch the one that had been latched in. The 1st & 2nd buttons would hardly go in at all. At this stage we weren't sure if this was a problem with the unit or just down to cable adjustment. Next job was to try the FSM method of adjusting the gear selector cable. This involved removing the screw that holds the adjuster in place, backing off the adjuster a few turns then pushing the cable in until it locates in the reverse detent (at least, that's how I remember it being worded). Then the adjustment was done by screwing the adjuster a set amount to line-up the holes. This was all supposed to be done with the reverse push button depressed. But we forgot this small (?) detail so ended up not knowing whether it had been adjusted correctly. At this stage we tried the buttons again but they still didn't select properly - sometimes we'd have no buttons latched in, and other times two buttons latched in. So we'd gone from an occasionally sticking neutral-drive change, to not being able to select a gear and not being sure what gear the trans had been left in! Next suggestion (thanks Ray) to try was to drop the trans pan to get a better idea of what was going on inside, but by now I was already in the dog house with the missus, so had to leave that job for next time. I still think we should be able to get over this problem with a bit more tinkering and getting a look inside once the pan's dropped, but when my bro suggested looking into whether new/recon pb-units are available, I thought I'd start making enquiries.

So that's where we are now. Pretty frustrating as you can imagine. Especially as we've hardly begun to see how our newly rebuilt engine performs. I'm hoping we can get some help from either the guy that rebuilt our trans or the engine builder that put the engine & trans back in the car, but I think they'll be reluctant to come out to where the car is. Still, I live in hope.....

I've not seen anyone selling new or reconditioned trans pushbutton
units. You could stumble upon a NOS unit I suppose. But these are
relatively trouble free mechanisms. You should be able to find a good
used pushbutton assembly.

Remind us why you think you need to replace the unit?

Imperial was the only place making specific 62-65 cables that I recall;
there is a place called Control Cable listed on the 62-65 vendor page
that may be able to make one or fix yours. Kramer may have good used
cables.
