The true originals from 1964  were actually machined out of a block of brass, and came apart for cleaning!  the black tubular version is a later substitute!  have asee justa couple of the orig ones on junkyard cars.  shoulda grabbed them....

That's the PCV valve.Yes,it should be replaced
periodically. They are available at your local parts
house. They come mostly in plastic,but can be had in
all metal w/ a 90 degree turn.
