Column to floor shifter

JC Whitney has a three speed floor shifter that they say is for changing  
from the column one. I want to know if you have to have the floor hump, or just  
cut a hole in the floor. I want to change to a floor shifter, but don't want 
to  go through the expense and hassle of that right now. Any help is greatly  
appreciated.
