Maybe someday when the car is not my primary source of transportation, I can do that. Right now I'm not even certain I have the correct shifter mount. I had my Comp Plus modified and shimmed by an old timer to improve the feel, so I don't want to tear into it until it starts getting loose. Shortening the throw sounds like a good idea though, but I'm starting to like the idea of a cupholder. . .

There is a way you can still use the correct finish plate Dave....I have
a 71 B-body pistol grip in my Polara. I got a new Comp Plus from Jegs
that has a stepped off handle mount for Chevelle or Camaro console. My
handle bolted right to it, but hit the dash in Reverse, 1st, and 3rd. I
drilled a new hole in the mount arm itself, not the handle, to angle the
handle back a little, then had a machine shop drill 2 new holes in the
1st-2nd and 3rd-4th shifter arms just inside the original holes for the
linkages, cost me $20. This shortened the shifter throw and now
everything is good, nothing hits. You might have to play with the
adjustments on the swivels a little, but it all works. I will try to get
some pics soon. Don't give up yet, there's a way. I was DETERMINED to
use a pistol grip cause I've always thought those things were cool! I'd
even use one in another make of car if I had one.
