Low oil pressure switch

Will a faulty low oil pressure switch on my 1964 383 cause the engine to
die? I see that the lead from the switch goes to the oil pressure light
and completes the circuit at the ignitian terminal on the ignition
switch. Wondered if this was an engine saving feature that if the
switch detected low oil pressure it would cut the engine off to prevent
damage. I have had this intermitent problem with the engine cutting off
and think this may be the problem. Ordered a new switch but wanted to
get the groups opinion if this could be the problem. Thanks in advance.
