If it is pink I would just top it off with Dexron III because that will be
compatible with what should be in their. Now that said, if you are going to
change the fluid and you probably should at 40,000 I would recommend
changing it all converter & pan. Also it is a good idea to change fluid
every 40,000 or so miles just because even if the oil looks good it breaks
down over time. I had a 85 Dodge Caravan that had 386,000 on the original
transmission. Look at it this way oil is cheaper than a overhaul. The
biggest enemy to transmissions is Heat & No Fluid Change. Chang the fluid &
filter at about every 40,000 and the tranny should last for a long long time
or longer! My opinion from experience.

Thanks Herb.
Just to be sure I'm doing the right thing, should I be changing all
The fluid or just topping it off? The car is a '63 Polara 500 with a
383 and automatic. I have enough fluid that it shows on the stick
When cold, but idling in neutral drops below 'add a pint'. It looks
Healthy pink. I bought it 8 months ago so I don't know the tranny
Fluid history. It's got 79,000 miles.
Is there a fluid I can safely add a pint of to top it off, or should I
Replace it all?
Thanks again.
