radiator fan

i have a 65 belvedere convertible, originally a 318 poly. i swapped in a 69 
383hp motor and now i have just 3 inches from the water pump pulley to the 
radiator.  this does not allow me to put the radiator fan on.  i used 
factory big block mounts.  why wont my fan fit?  do i have to get a 
different radiator?  i have tried a single 16inch electric fan in front of 
the radiator, but the engine overheats when stopped in traffic.  can anyone 
tell me whats wrong?
