Re: Our Hobby Threatened Again by Scrappage

Gary,

Thank you for the information; I have e-mailed our State Senator and Pelosi.

A sample of my correspondence is below;

Regarding the 2009 stimulus program and vehicle scrappage proposal.

Thank you for your selfless service to the people of California and for your past faithfulness in responding to our/my concerns for not only the State but also representing our voice on National matters.

I voice my concern and opposition to the proposed “Cash For Clunkers” section of the proposed 2009 Economic Stimulus Package. The proposal will not clean the air and financially impair the aftermarket car/parts industry for antique & collectible vehicles as well.

The minute portion of 30yrs. and older vintage vehicles on the road are proven not to sacrifice emission/pollution goals due to their extremely low roadway miles (less than 2500 miles per year as per Collector Car Insurance requirements) and their particular maintenance and upkeep.

Additionally, the downside for the poor is to eliminate "affordable" quality/emission compliant used-vehicles available for purchase to the low income family.

No one is against clean-air but everyone is against a scapegoat and poor legislation, though well-intentioned, but poorly written and impractical/injurious when executed.

I urge you to consider removal of the "Cash for Clunkers" provision in this proposed package.

Respectfully,
Gary L. Pavlovich

Hi all,

Only on rare and special occasions do I point out things that are politically tinged but still Mopar related. In this case our hobby is again at immediate risk to short-sighted legislation that simple-mindedly equates "old" with "polluter" and ignores the 99.9% daily driver fleet; any one of which badly maintained belch far more emissions than a max wedge.

The "2009 Economic Stimulus Package" has an orientation that 'appears to be more like “get the older cars off of the road” rather than to repair them to be emissions-complaint. That “old cars” are a main contributor to air quality issues, rather than “poorly-maintained” vehicles in general. That these allegedly offending older vehicles should be arbitrarily crushed and gone forever . . .which would have a negative impact upon the vintage vehicle hobby with little real improvement in air quality or decreased use of foreign petroleum.'

I like to see our 1962 to 1965 Mopars in museums; but seeing them run on the road and track is important as well. Without parts or parts cars guess what will be the fate of our Mopars.

Contact your elected officials now. The legislative rush is on, so e-mails and phone calls are the only way to act effectively. The links and full details are online at this page:

Thanks,
