I can report that, even using the correct puller, the tapered axle thread mushroomed at the end when I pulled the rear drum off a stubborn 1963. 
Lucky for me, I had left the nut on, loosened about 1 inch, and  having nut on did indeed straighten the threads when I removed  the nut.
