Re: 1/2 inch Oil pick up...

Yes have him shot or at least horse whipped. .
The problem with BB mopars is that the pump is not submerged in the oil pan like other engines. It has to pull it up fropm the pan At high RPM the oil wants to pull apart (makes bubbles in the oil as the pump can poull harder than the oil wants to flow in the 3/8 pick up. Everything you do to reduce restriction on the intake side lessens this effect or problem. Even wth a 1/2 pickup the system is in trouble above 7000 rpm and dual lines or a secondary line is required for engine survival. (I make my own and have since the 70s but many go the Milidon route. For an OR the 1/2 pickup is excellant . Without it it MIGHT be Ok but is that waht you want. A maybe ok set up to save 20 minutes of work? The 20 minutes it takes to install the 1/2 pick up is time well spent. Whae looking for a mchine shop look for one who can follow the build exactly. I have a friend who does a lot of Chevy work We share info and help each other when weaere in the others camp. We know that we cant know it all but we know whatthe othercan help us with. I am often there drilling a Pickup and tapping for him. he has learned that what i say works. When working i on A chevy I go to him fr the same kind of thing. We dont argure about what to do , we just do it because weare aware f the fact that waht they are doing works well. The lemans engine a tiny 400 cubic incher is starting its forthsaeason of road racing . it is untouched since it left here and is abused weekly in duels with 8 911 Carreara and such. Deep dwn in its sump lurks a Hemi 1/2 inch pickup. pulling smooth slippery oil devoid ofcavitatio bubles from deep in it 7 qt pan and dpushing it through the engine in large quanties where is lubricates and cools the bearings and crank. I cant go over a fix that otor. it had to be good when it left here. That is why it has a 1/2 pickup and a hundred other little things. Why would anyone want to mess with that?

Subject: 1/2 inch Oil pick up...

Good Morning all! I am getting some bids for my engine work locally for hopes of getting my engine (Ole' Reliable build) done this fall. I gave the guy some of the spec's for the block and he questioned tapping the oil pick up to 1/2 inch. He said, "it is over kill." "Sure you have more volume, but the gallies are the same size." Do I need to walk away from this guy??
