Original equipment filter on the 340's was the longer filter. Don't remember
them even making the shorter filter back in the day ( I had a brand new one in
1969).

The shorter filter is correct. If you can fit the longer filter on, a lot of
people use the B RB style for the extra amount of filtering material it
contains.

length? This engine has a shorter oil filter on it than a full quart size.
Is the full quart size the correct filter?
