I'm not sure you did anything wrong.  Remember that the gear on the crank rotates twice for every one rotation of the gear on the cam.  Either way, the mark at the bottom or the top of the cam gear, is right when the mark on the crank gear is at the top. The piston is still at Top Dead Center (TDC).   (Of course, it's hard to tell if you got it right when they are 180 degrees apart)
