Re: Dover Motorsports shuts down Gateway track

Hi Steve,

It was nice chatting with you on the phone the other night, anyway the new track, called Mid-America raceway park is supposed to be 27 miles North Of Wentzille near highway 61, they have a website and according to their description of the track surface these guys have put some serious thought into it. For instance, they mention extending the concrete area past the lights more before it transitions into asphalt, nice safety feature there.

I read about this and the alleged re-opening of Memphis Motorsports in the race section of Moparts, I imagine you can probably find it on yellowbullit also but I tend not to go to that site too often, the testosterone overload is a little much for me.

Joey

Yeah, that's too bad but....the rumor mill is heavy that Memphis Motorsports is about to reopen and Missouri is getting a new track built so I guess things aren't all bad. I hope Bret Kepner lands somewhere great, he is one of the best drag racing announcers around.

RIP Monster MoPar. )-: I hope they find a new venue.

Gateway International Raceway's relatively short history came to an end on Wednesday with the announcement from its owner, Dover Motorsports Inc., that the facility in Madison, Ill., will be shut down and the land will be sold.
Gateway debuted in 1997 with a Champ Car race won by Paul Tracy, and it
hosted its final race, a NASCAR Nationwide Series event, in October.
The facility was best known for hosting three Champ Car races on Memorial Day weekend (1997-99). The goal was to get many of the Indianapolis 500's
fans and its media members to make the four-hour drive. It worked for a
while before the event was moved to September and then was released to the
Indy Racing League.
NASCAR also staged Camping World Truck Series races on the 1.25-mile oval,
and the facility's drag strip hosted an NHRA event.
The track will also be remembered for the drivers who excelled there.
Raul Boesel won the first Champ Car pole, followed the next year by Greg
Moore. Alex Zanardi, Michael Andretti, Juan Pablo Montoya, Al Unser Jr., Gil de Ferran and Helio Castroneves won open-wheel races there. Dan Wheldon even
won one of CART's Indy Lights races.
In NASCAR, Brad Keselowski and Carl Edwards had their dramatic finish there in the Nationwide Series. Tony Schumacher (Top Fuel) and Robert Hight (Funny
Car) won the final NHRA races.
Dover Motorsports now only owns Dover International Speedway and Nashville
Superspeedway.
