Re: MATS 2011?

I was there all 3 days.

Friday, showed up at 8am at the gate and as soon as they opened I hit the swap meet. There were about 3 rows, double sided, of people selling stuff. There were quite a few good deals to be had. I picked up a shift-delete plate for my 64 dodge. Weather was very windy, cloudy and in the 50's.

Saturday, showed up at 9am and headed straight for the drag strip. As has been stated, a huge ugly storm with rain, snow flakes and huge wind converged on the show. Just as the quick-16 was about to start. We huddled under the stands for a while hoping it would blow through fast. After about 30 minutes we went and sat in the heat of the car in the parking lot. After about an hour it quit raining and we headed back in to the show. They resumed racing but it was cold and windy still. The damage was done and it seemed as though half the people had left.

Sunday showed up at around 930am. The weather was finally sunny and we watched some of the races and went through the rest of the show, vendor, and swap areas.

By far, for me, the highlight of the show was the first show appearance of the freshly restored original Bill Maverick 64 Super Stock Hemi car. Early friday I got to talk with the guy and his brother who owned it. He opened up the doors and showed me every little detail, pics of how they found it, the whole story. This car is one of the five or six 64 aluminum nose cars that got the hemi at the end of 64. They spared no expense on the resto. All the aluminum was there, every paint overspray mark, the detail was insane. They even dug the guy out of retirement that had originally done the headers and had him do a new set. Part of Saturdays pre-drag race show they had Tom Hoover give Bill Maverick the keys to the car and start it up. It was the first time he had seen the car since he sold it in 65. Then the brother of the owner rumbled it down the strip (just before the storm hit!).

As was said, the attendance was WAY down. I feel sorry for the Painters(the people putting on the show). I am sure they lost money and I worry that the MATS may not survive.

I will try to get some pix uploaded this weekend if I get the chance.
