I would keep the heads as well. Don Dulmage has the best results with porting 452 heads to get very high flow numbers.

Additonally, there is a value to cast iron heads over aluminum in some cases (as well as preference). The aluminum head requires more compression to retain the HP producing "heat" and cycles at different rates than iron heads...this is not a detriment but if you start out with iron heads and need to replace a head or heads you may want or have to replace the pistons for the same compression ratio if your only alternative is an expensive (expensive compared to cast iron 452 heads) aluminum head in addition to the cost of new forged aluminum pistons to make those aluminum heads work as designed. In short, the cast iron head will save you money and still make incredible HP.

Also, remember back in the sixties when we junked all those parts we wished we now had saved...?

Hi All,

Thanks for the recent (on the old mail list) input on what to do with a 1976 400 motor. I'll save the basics of the motor for someone's stroker project.

How about the 452 heads that were on the motor? Scrap them? They need to be fully gone through. Isn't the trend nowadays to go to aftermarket aluminum heads?
