I also have an axle assy with a blown wheel bearing removed from a 383 '66 Coronet 500, will the third member from that fit the '65 housing and be a better choice for this scenario?

Yes, Ben - the 8 3/4 third members are interchangeable.  I took the one out of my '64 tapered axle rear and put it in the '68 rear that I swapped into the car last year - no problem.

Thanks for the info all, I should have looked into this years ago because when we were having troubles with the rear end in my son's wagon after the 383 was swapped in, we replaced it with the axle assy from the Polara, it seemed the logical choice since the Polara was a 383 car. If we had thought of or had knowledge of the gearing we could have used the rear end from the parts car. Too late to try to retrieve Polara rear end back because I am hauling the wagon to my Dad's shop in California in a few weeks.
I installed the '65 rear end in the '64 Polara to keep it a "roller" also seemed logical choice if I ever made the '64 into a hot rod. Now I am working on the car again I want it more original, but lower gears probably not a big deal, and will help at stop light take offs.
The wagon's rear end was installed in the '65 to keep it a roller and it went with that car.

Then again, the Polara is going to have hub caps....will the '64 center section fit the '65 rear end?

The 65 rear is worth nothing, and I'd be glad to stop by and pick it up. :-)
Normally, but not always, a small block and a /6, are geared lower than a big block, simply because they don't make as much torque as a big block.
The ring gear should be marked on both.

My '64 Polara currently has the rear axle assembly installed that was swapped out of the '65 Dodge 330 sedan that was mentioned in previous messages. For originality, I want to install the rear axle assembly from my '64 440 4-dr parts car which is 318 poly/auto trans. Is there any difference between the rear end axle ratios used for 318 poly/auto and 383/auto engine cars?

Also, the 65 rear axle assy was from /6 manual shift car, is this useable or worth anything?
